Senate debating now and expected to vote tomorrow (Friday).
Brief summary: Tell your Senators to vote NO on the Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act (RISAA) which the House passed this week. RISAA is in part to address the expiration on April 19 of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Advocates were hoping to the renewal would include a protective measures to weaken some of the warrantless surveillance provisions in FISA. The amendment to add protective measures failed by one vote. Instead, the House expanded warrantless surveillance! Senator Ron Wyden describes the expansion as “terrifying” in an article which also includes abuses even before the expansion just passed by the House: “In recent years, there have been multiple revelations of government abuse of Section 702. FBI agents have conducted warrantless searches of Section 702-acquired data for the communications of Black Lives Matter protesters, members of Congress, journalists and — in one case — more than 19,000 donors to a congressional campaign. NSA officials have aimed searches at online dating prospects and potential tenants.” thehill.com/opinion/technology/4599695-the-fisa-expansion-turning-cable-installers-into-spies-can...

Additional ask: you can urge senators that if they are going to pass RISAA then please support Senator Wyden’s expected amendment “to strike out a provision of the FISA bill authored by House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Turner (R-Ohio) that he [Wyden] says would dramatically increase the authority of law enforcement and intelligence agencies to snoop on Americans.” Quote from today’s The Hill thehill.com/homenews/senate/4602836-fisa-surveillance-vote-deadline/
