Please consider leaving a message with the OSU Office of the President, 614-292-2424, to say that as an Ohioan whose tax dollars support OSU, you object to further arrests of peaceful protesters and you urge amnesty for the arrested student protesters. Thursday, on the OSU campus, more than thirty peaceful protesters were arrested because they failed to disperse upon the order of law enforcement. They were charged with criminal trespass. This is happening all around the country with more than 500 arrests on more than 40 campuses as of Friday morning. The arrests are an extreme over-reaction and are clearly meant to suppress the growing protest movement against U.S. funding of indiscriminate and disproportionate military actions against Gazans.

Robert Reich said on April 23, “It is never appropriate to call in armed police to arrest peaceful student demonstrators.” Meeting peaceful civil disobedience with over-reaction, violence and suppression are the tactics that were used against civil rights protesters. Civil disobedience is sometimes necessary to achieve justice. It took civil disobedience for Black people in many states to have the right to vote and to sit anywhere in a bus.

The Democratic Caucus Leadership, Franklin County Delegation, Jewish Caucus also objected to the law enforcement actions at OSU: “Students have a right to protest peacefully, no matter the cause, and we have to vigorously defend their ability to do so…And while peacefully demonstrating that right, there is no room or excuse for the unnecessary force that was used on the students and demonstrators, including an elected member of the Ohio House of Representatives who sustained minor injuries.” Democratic Caucus Leadership, Franklin County Delegation, Jewish Caucus Release Statement on Ohio State University Demonstrations www.ohiosenate.gov/members/william-p-demora/news/democratic-caucus-leadership-franklin-county-del...

It's been a busy week for us here at GCDP, and last night was no exception!

While some of us attended the County Engineer gathering, others attended the EPA public meeting/hearing for Tom's Mulch in Sugarcreek.

This event was well attended and focused on the remedies that Tom's must comply with in order to stop polluting our water ways. There seemed to be many concerns about the testing and enforcement of the limits. Time will tell whether Tom's Mulch has decided to obey the laws it has been breaking.

Federal infrastructure money is not being used, and is generally not available for smaller cities and counties, we were told. It tends to go to larger states/projects, and not places like Greene.

I hope there was credit given for a Democratic Congress that passed the Infrastructure bill that so much of the infrastructure work is being done across the nation.

I wish I could have been in 2 places!

This is the first 2024 event in a series of presentations entitled “Local Issues? Local Strategies!” sponsored by the Greene County Democratic Party. The series started in 2023. All the presentations are free and open to the public and aim to educate and inform participants about civic issues of local importance.

GCDP Chair Kim McCarthy hopes the sessions attract new voters and emerging local leaders to invest in our county and communities, adding “So many people don’t know much about basic aspects of our government services, and haven’t gotten a chance to hear directly from county leaders about their important and necessary work. Without a bigger picture, people too often see the government as their worst experience with it. People who vote need to be well informed.”

Future presentations are being planned, so your ideas for speakers and topics are welcome. Please contact kristamagaw@gmail.com with any questions about the event or with ideas for future presentations.

Our very first ever Book Club was a really uplifting experience, IMHO.

Thanks to our hosts, Jenn and Sarah, and to the attendees for making this evening be a place where we women could share our fears and discuss how to overcome them, just like Stacy Abrams did. What a beautiful opportunity that was!!

So many wonderful quotes from the book, along with examples of how one can persevere, despite numerous and ongoing obstacles. We can all learn lessons from this.

I'm looking forward to our next gathering in August! Stay tuned for details.
